PENNED | A hands-on lettering workshop with Ken Barber
Presented by AIGA Philadelphia
Take a break from pushing pixels — let’s draw some letters! Join type designer Ken Barber and AIGA Philadelphia to increase your awareness and appreciation of the letter’s place in graphic design. In this small group workshop, you’ll gain a stronger understanding of type and lettering by applying foundational letter-making principles firsthand. Take home your own custom lettering specimens!
AM Session: Hand-Lettering in Graphic Design
Not only do hand-drawn logos add depth and personality to design, but they provide a unique look that simply cannot be matched by conventional typography. Participants will reference typographic models while drawing their own one-of-a-kind wordmarks. A comprehensive slide show and fundamental drawing exercises will assist attendees as they produce one-of-a-kind hand-lettering.
PM Session: Pre-Fab Faces: Creating and Designing with Prefabricated Letters
Participants will design a system of prefabricated letterforms — much like a typographic character set — for hand-assembly in distinctive wordmarks and headlines. A introductory slide presentation and drawing demonstration will help students acquire a practical foundation for producing and implementing ready-made letters in various design contexts.
